naive young artist makes 1st big mistake of career

Mon Apr 21, 2008, 3:22 PM
so i had a local coffee shop/ café/ gallery call me up and ask if i wanted to do a solo show with them to help fill a gap in their line up. naturally i said yes. today, as i was at the local frame shop/ gallery/ coffee shop getting a little framing done. i asked about buying some matt board to make labels for my show. when the owner found out i was showing at the other gallery he got this look on his face like i'd stabbed him in the back. he said i had burned bridges with him and he was no longer willing to show or sell any of my work. he said it should be a lesson to me on how to deal with galleries in the future. he liked me and was extremely hurt that i didn't ask to show with him first. i'd been a loyal customer of his in the past but had no idea he was so eager to show my work.

he should have asked.

while i can understand his desire for exclusivity, i was under the impression that that was the kind of thing that would get spelled out in a contract of some kind. not just thrown out after the mistake was made. well, the valuable lesson has been learned i guess. i wish it wasn't on such a pass/fail basis.

i get the feeling that this has less to do with the local businesses trying to play like the big dogs and more to do with small town business rivalry. one thing's for sure, i need to get out of here before i get to be as bitter as everyone else in town.

Oi.

That is really petty and stupid. What a pile of crap.

That guy's a moron, you were right to take the other show.

well good luck with that one, mate. theres a lot of bullheadedness in the art business, and I do believe that you just had a little nip of it yourself. this industry can be a real bellend some times, so buck up and bite back!

kind of a spring on his part.
making an assumption like that.

Music is the only thing that makes sense anymore. Play it loud enough, it keeps the demons at bay.
Here's what I would do if I were in your shoes. (Yay, roleplaying! Fun!)

Dear Sir _____

Given that I am being treated as if I have "burned bridges," I have decided that I at least deserve some satisfaction as if I had actually done this.
I've been a loyal customer of yours for some time now, and it's absurd that it should be ended on such black and white terms.
I was given a offer (something you never gave me), and I took it with great zeal. Had you had the sense to have done the same, I would have accepted with just as much (if not significantly more) zeal. Even though I am the young blossoming artist, it would appear that you are too naive to see this. With that, I offer you the opportunity to go fuck yourself.

My deepest regrets,
Professor Father Colonel Bob, OBGYN.

You shouldn't put up with that shit. Start a campaign to boycott his shop entirely.

That doesn't seem very fair, it's not like you WENT to another gallery and asked to be shown there, they asked you, and you had no idea you couldn't exhibit your art at multiple places, as it's yours to do what you want with.
Though it's his business and he can do as he wishes, that's kinda rough since it does sound like the kinda thing you make a contract for.

sounds like he took business personal. he shouldn't have been so offended, especially since it sounds like it was most likely a one time thing. it's ridiculous that he went so far as to say that you burned bridges with him. what's to say you can't display your work at both shops, ya know? (unless a contract were involved, as you pointed out)

buy the ticket, take the ride. but remember: it's just a ride.
Damn, that's fairly harsh.

Maybe he'll come round, if he likes your work.

plus, as a small business owner, he of all people should understand your need to try to spread your art around to as many places as possible. you're trying to make a living just like he is. as i said, it's business and shouldn't be taken personally.
